GOVERNOR AND OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ANNOUNCE CHANGES TO ATHLETIC QUARANTINES

Last Thursday in a press conference, Governor DeWine announced changes to quarantine guidelines for athletes who had incidental exposure to COVID-19 in a classroom. Today we received the following notice.

The Addendum to Director’s Second Amended Order that Provides Mandatory Requirements for Youth, Collegiate, Amateur, Club and Professional Sports and Extracurricular Activities is in effect now. For spring sports and extracurricular activities, students will not be required to quarantine because they have an incidental exposure to COVID-19 in a classroom under the school-based exposure guidance unless symptoms develop. Students will now be permitted to participate in organized sporting and extracurricular activities as long as they remain symptom-free and follow applicable safety precautions.

However, students who are exposed in other settings outside of the classroom will be required to continue following existing CDC quarantine guidance.

To translate this, students who have been deemed to be a close a contact, BUT who still have school privileges, will no longer have to quarantine from athletics or other extracurricular activities so long as they remain symptom free. If you recall, several weeks ago we announced that students would not be permitted to play sports or be involved in other extracurriculars if they quarantined with school privileges. This guidance is now in effect, which is a huge relief now that we have all the students back together.

Please also remember that is ONLY for students were exposed in the classroom or on the bus where both students were masked and within 3-6 feet. Students exposed at home, in the cafeteria, at practice or such will still be quarantined for 14 days and will not have school or athletic privileges.

Needless to say, but this is a positive development.
